Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. She has to deal with a president who serves as his own director of communications, multiple legal battles that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own disputes. Schlapp kept her focus throughout the process, collaborating closely with the White House's legislative and political affairs teams along with policy shops as well as wider communications operations to coordinate policies' implementation. Allies to Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, another candidate for the position, began jousting in the media. Schlapp stated that, after that the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh for a private conversation.
